When Kindness Feels Hard

We are in the early days of the 21-Day Kindness Pledge, and if you haven’t joined yet, there’s still time! This journey is about committing to kindness daily, even when it feels impossible. Maybe you’re exhausted, overwhelmed, or dealing with someone who seems determined to test your patience. Life isn’t all rainbows and unicorns, and the truth is, sometimes we just don’t feel like being kind. But kindness isn’t about ignoring our feelings but choosing how we respond to them. As a coach, I love working with people to help them create and live a life they love, and a big part of that is developing daily practices that keep them on track, even when kindness feels like the last thing they want to offer.

Navigating life’s struggles and sorrows intentionally allows us to move toward solutions rather than staying frustrated and focused on our problems. Choosing kindness in challenging moments isn’t about pretending everything is fine; it’s about acknowledging our feelings and acting in a way that aligns with the life we want to create. Daily practice is key to this, and it’s exactly what I support my coaching clients with—helping them stay aligned with their values, even on the tough days.

Moving forward,I invite you to practice kindness even when it feels hard by:

Pause Before Reacting: Take a deep breath before responding when frustration rises. Giving yourself even a few seconds can shift your perspective and help you choose a response that aligns with kindness rather than reacting in the heat of the moment.

Acknowledge Your Feelings: Feeling upset, hurt, or angry is okay. Instead of suppressing these emotions, recognize them and find healthy ways to process them, such as journaling, talking to a trusted friend, or getting out in nature.

Choose One Small Act: Kindness doesn’t have to be grand. A smile, a deep breath, or even choosing to disengage from negativity can be an act of kindness toward yourself and others.

Reflect on Your Intentions: Remember why kindness matters when it is difficult. What kind of person do you want to be? How do you want to feel at the end of the day? Reconnecting with your bigger picture can help shift your energy.

Choosing kindness leads to a more peaceful, healthier, and happier life, even in the most challenging moments. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s intentionality.
