Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Are you afraid of the dark? Growing up I sure was. While I grew up in a Midwest city, my house was in a very wooded area and set back from the main road. It was dark at night without streetlights and there were lots of animal noises taking place too. Then add in an older brother who would go outside and shine a flashlight in my window or toss rocks at it to scare me too. Now, many years later, as I live in Chicago, it’s nearly impossible for it to be completely dark as there is always light on in the city. While I still prefer a sunny day to a dark one, I have grown fond of the dark. I LOVE nightfall as light and dark meet each other. I LOVE how quiet (well quieter as it is Chicago) begins to lead as the city settles in for rest.

In the spiritual world, we talk about light and dark as one being good (light) to move toward and the other (dark) to be avoided as much as possible. Each serves their purpose and each blend into the other. It takes light to see shadows and it takes darkness to see the stars. One of my own quotes “Look to the light as it’s hard to see in the darkness,” while it holds true at the start of darkness, if you give yourself time, your eyes will adjust to the darkness for you to see what needs to be seen. Know that whatever you find yourself going through right now, celebration or sorrow, joy or anger, the light, and dark is there to support you from different perspectives. There is no need to fear darkness or fear the light. What there is a need for is to understand it is all there to serve you if you are willing to look at your shadows and see your stars.

Moving forward, I encourage you to face the light and dark in your life by having:

Faith that all will work out for the highest good of all involved.

Courage to stand strong in who YOU are regardless of the circumstances you find yourself in.

Trust in yourself knowing that your celebrations and sorrows are all a part of the great journey you are on called life.

Mostly, my wish for you is to embrace all of it. Embrace what you LOVE and embrace what you fear, for it is when you embrace all of life, you allow LOVE to grow and fear to dissipate.

Until next time, the stars are ours. Will you stargaze with me?

Affirmation:

I am surrounded by LOVE both day and night.
